Living to Serve Article

     In the remote town of Junction City, there resides a young man with the heart of a champion and the work ethic of a coal miner. If Sam Gonzales isn’t sitting through one of his four advanced placement classes, he can be found either planning a jam-packed pep assembly in honor of his school’s athletic and scholar stars, or coordinating his school district’s annual blood donation drive, or possibly even working on his next speech involving the latest agricultural issue in preparation for his district contest.

   Taylor Garofano, of the Jefferson FFA, has recently gotten a few chicks talking. This last year at the Marion County Fair, Taylor entered her top three market chickens in the show for her first time; however, what most didn't think about was the time and work that went into raising a flock of 'pecky' eaters. "Everyday I had to make sure that my chickens had food and water... I fed them fryer ration poultry feed and some vegetable scraps from my garden... when preparing my market broilers I had to bathe them and make sure that they were free of mites and other parasites" said Garofano.

Doing to Learn Article

     Every year, students around the State utilize skills they've gained from inside the classroom to accomplish events that many would find terrifying. After having competed in the creed FFA career development event, Jennifer Goddik of Dayton FFA learned so much about not only the history and heritage of the foundation of the FFA organization, but more importantly, she learned a lot about a solid way of living. She discovered that there is a need for leaders who play square with others, and who depend on her for happiness in this world.

     Deep, in the heart of Multnomah County, students gather from around the state for the annual North West Ag Show at the Portland Expo Center. In attendance were 46 agriculture education students from Cascade High School in Turner, Oregon. Amongst the group was Cascade FFA Chapter Sentinel, Caleb LaChapelle. "We spent a lot of time at the Willamina Meats booth... Mike is a great guy and we bring our market hogs to him every year. The samples were also fantastic" said Caleb about the booth he enjoyed most.
